Becker was sitting downstairs when I came out of my room. I had showered and was now wearing an overly large New England Patriots Jersey that came to my knees. My hair was up in a messy bun and I carried my notepad and case of pencils.

He was watching a murder mystery on Investigation Discovery but turned his attention to me when I sat down on the couch next to him.

A few minutes of silence passed as the detective talked about the gruesome details of the case that was on before Becker cleared his throat.

“It’s almost nine,” he said and I drew my gaze up to him.

He had changed too into a black t-shirt, with a grey and blue flannel shirt that was left unbuttoned and grey sweatpants.

His dark hair was tousled as if he’d just showered and his beard was trimmed a little shorter than before, so now I could see more of his beautiful facial structure.

I nodded to his question. “Yeah.”

“Your mother isn’t usually home at these times?” That damn frown of his was back in between his eyebrows.

“Nope.” I shrugged and opened my notepad. “Trust me it’s nothing new. She’s been doing this forever.”

When my dad would be away on business trips, my mother would use that as her jail-free card and leave me with our nanny for a week. Or until whenever Dad was due back.

His frown relaxed, but I could see the worry in his eyes. “So what do you eat when she’s gone?”

“Whatever’s there.”

“Whatever’s there…meaning junk?” There was a smile swimming in those dark blue eyes of his, so I smiled and nodded.

Shaking his head, Becker switched the TV off and stood up. “My mother would have an aneurysm if she heard that. Come on, I’ll make you dinner.”

I watched as Becker disappeared into the kitchen, so I grabbed my notebook and pencils and silently followed behind him like a child.

“What are you making?” I put my book and pencils down and sat down at one of the bar stools that were placed in front of the white marble counter top.

“Your dad and I grew up in the South so I’m making the best Southern-style burgers you have ever eaten,” he said as he got the ground beef from the fridge and placed that into a glass bowl.

“The best?” I arched an eyebrow and bit my bottom lip to keep from laughing.

“You’ll have to taste them and see for yourself, but it’s the best. Trust me,” he said.

I sat there and watched him as he mixed spices into the ground beef, before making them into thick patties and then he moved on to making buns. He worked in silence and was neat and paid careful attention to everything as he moved around the kitchen.

So while he worked, I opened my notebook and started drawing. I’d been traumatized after finding my dad that everything seemed to come to a standstill in my life.

One of my true passions was art and I loved drawing and painting.
